Introduction
Humans depend, directly or indirectly, on the natural environment for survival and well-being. For example, the fossil fuels generate the electricity that humans cannot live without and the food humans consumed are all derived from the natural environment. Furthermore, rapid urbanisation has increased the demand for raw materials, energy and food, leading to an increase in carbon emission. Therefore, in order to support present and future, man must pursue sustainability which is to create and maintain conditions under which nature and humans can co-exist in harmony.
In the pursue of environmental sustainability, mankind must look into developing new systems and structures to reduce the consumption of raw materials, energy, carbon emission. Globally, buildings contribute greatly to the consumption of raw materials, energy, electricity and water. Therefore, an environment-friendly green building is one way mankind can achieve environment sustainability. In this project, a Green School is designed. The design of this green school aims to reduce carbon footprints and reduce environmental problems through the various green features and structures.
Hypothesis
A school is a place where teachers, students and staff spend long hours in. In the design of the green school, there are various green features that aim to meet the aspects of a green building which are the structure design, energy efficiency, material efficiency and enhancement of the indoor environment quality. With these green features, the green school will be an environmentally friendly green building which has reduced impact on mankind and the environment. The green school is also an environmentally sustainable infrastructure that supports the emerging lifestyles of teachers and students with higher expectations of the place which they work and study in.
