Problem Statements:

1. The foyer needs improved ventilation and thermal comfort.

2. Children need a safe environment to play in.

When we visited the foyer during our site visits, the issue that caught our attention is the glare that was reflecting off the glazed floor tiles in the waiting area of the drop-off point. Bearing in mind that the entrance of the drop off point is facing the East. we came up with the design of an enclosed entrance, so that the shade will block out excessive sunlight, while at the same time, providing shades for the visitors on wet weathers. This will also ensure the safety and comfort of the visitors.

The design of the roof is inspired by the clasping hands of a mother and her child, thus signifying close bonds and unconditional love. Due to the aluminium cladding with a matte finish is used, sunlight will be reflected off the facade and thus the foyer will not have as much thermal heat gain. In addition, with the translucent glass in between the spaces, the sunlight shining into the foyer will be soft light, therefore it reduces the strain on the eyes. To facilitate thermal comfort, two large openings are used to promote cross ventilation across the shade and the foyer itself. This technology is called wind scoop.

We also incorporated Low-E Glass on one of the roofs to reduce thermal heat gain in the hospital. This is so that it ties back with the first problem statement of improving ventilation and thermal comfort.
